We have a new Ancient Orchard at Hedgerow Farm.
The orchard is newly built with old bricks that date back to a period of time before WWII. McMillan Bricks from a long deceased, Scottish brick maker who lived and worked in Milledgeville, Georgia. The trees planted are young grafts of old southern apple trees. One aged Redbud stands just inside the eastern wall. We tossed a few daffodil bulbs in the ground near another gated entrance. It was January, and yes, they bloomed just a few weeks later.
Epiphany was the day of planting. We didn’t plan for that date weeks ahead of time. It just happened that good weather, trees, and work crew came together January 06, 2012. A good omen perhaps for the new ancient orchard.
