First lambs of 2013

Jacob Lamb

Brena’s two ram lambs entered the world today around noon. Sensible timing. Jacob sheep often twin with occasional tripletts.  Last year Brena delivered two ewe lambs.  This year’s lambs, our third lambing season at HF, will all have names beginning with the letter “C” and so we  shall consult the list created by nieces, nephews […]

Legacy bulbs

spring bulbs

Pansies are instant gratification.  There’s room in the garden for pansies.  Bulb planting asks that we plan ahead, anticipate, and then enjoy years of delight lasting long after the digging and perhaps long after the digger is gone.  The ghosts of old homesteads reside among the daffodils  in now empty fields.  A testament to a […]

Formality and Rusticity

Italian Cypress

The Long Barn and Chicken Run.  Farm rustic, confirmed by roosters, hens, turkeys, and old fig trees nearby.  The evergreen structure of camellias, boxwood, and recently added Italian Cypress add formality, beauty, shade, and hiding places for the creatures of HF.   Crape Myrtle lined walkway gives additional shade in the summer months.  Folding wooden chairs […]

The kitchen desk has now been claimed to organize our family’s recipes collected for years.  Hand writing them on recipe cards 4×6 size.  Trying to write at least one recipe a day, this project may still take several months.  Noting where and when the recipe was found. or who passed it along to us.  when […]

Evaluating Rams

0

It’s almost lambing season again and you cannot contemplate lambs without due consideration of a ram.  We kept 3 rams out of last year’s lambs and hope to register at least two of them.  This is Bradley who looks like a two horned ram but is most likely a fused four horn. Jacob sheep can […]

Pollen Baskets and Blooms

Honey bees in Georgia are collecting pollen even in winter.  That spot of yellow on the leg is a basket designed for carrying pollen from local plants to the local hive. no more than five miles apart.    Honeybees in California’s almond fields are definitely not local.  They are trucked in from around the USA […]

Turkey Strut

Narrangansett Tom Turkey

The turkeys at Hedgerow Farm are free to wander the farm throughout the day.  They prefer to be where ever the action is at the moment.  Cars, trucks, tractors, attract them.  They have hopped into open service vans,  perched on the roof of the electrician’s truck and remained so even while it was driving out […]

Pecan Harvest

Pecans from Georgia

Pecan season has just ended.  While we are most grateful for this year’s high yield,  we are tired of  picking them up.  Friends are tired of picking them up.  This is just an afternoon, maybe two of harvesting.  More than 600lbs of pecans were gathered from end of October to end of January.  The local […]

Jacob lamb and Carlton Daffodils

Lambs appear in springtime, at least around here they do.  Most will be found in the pasture.   Bilbo Baggins was just visiting.  The daffodils are Division II,  Carltons.  They do well in southeast. This we learned from Brent and Becky’s most wonderful catalogue.  more on daffodils another day.

Gift of Feral Pig

0

When you live on a farm, people bring you gifts.  With teeth, or claws, or beaks.  Alive or dead. Sometimes we must say no thank you. This  feral pig appears cute, deceivingly so. We were not yet “pig tight” on our fencing.  Wilbur would have been wild and free again within hours of release into […]
